- He was born at Chisso Hospital in 1956. He grew up in Nogawa, Nagasaki, Minamata, Kumamoto prefecture. His mother came from Yudo and his father’s sister, Ms. Fujie Sakamoto, married into a family in Yudo. This family relationship led him to consume fish and shellfish daily. He applied for official certification for Minamata disease in 2005. In 2007, he was one of nine plaintiffs in a suit against the national government, Kumamoto prefecture and Chisso in district court concerning patients of fetal Minamata disease. In 2014, their suit was dismissed at the first trial. In December of 2014, they began their appeal in the Fukuoka High Court. He has kept appealing for correct recognition of the congenital Minamata disease patients, who are not easily identified.
