- He was born in 1934 in Kagoshima prefecture. He started working in Minamata in 1953 and later married, and had a daughter named Tomoko in 1956. She was certified as a fetal Minamata disease patient in 1962. He filed an action as part of the plaintiff families in the first lawsuit and won the case, obtaining a medical passbook. He is currently the president of the Minamata Disease Mutual Aid Association. He used to work for a subsidiary of Chisso, now named Senko, to provide for his wife, Yoshiko, and seven children. He has kept stressing the value of life through Tomoko’s life and his own experiences of Minamata disease, and speaking out against corporate society’s irrational attitudes toward the victims.
